Seven people were taken to the isolation center at Mbagathi Hospital for close monitoring as they are believed to be among the individuals who came in contact with the Kenyan Patient who tested positive for coronavirus.

Reports indicate that the seven individuals are from the same place where the patient lives, Simba Drive Ole Kasasi estate in Ongata Rongai.

The patient is said to have flown from Ohio, U.S. where she is a student.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe confirmed that the patient was living alone and also expressed his gratitude to the patient for taking her own initiative to be examined after she began experiencing significant symptoms.

Passengers that she sat next to her on her way home have also been traced by health officials.

Mutahi Kagwe urged Kenyans not to panic but continue with normal day to day activities.

According to the World Health Organization, Symptoms of coronavirus are runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever and difficulty breathing in severe cases.

The identity of patient still remains unknown with the government set to hold a press briefing at Kenyatta National Hospital at 5:00 pm to give further updates on the coronavirus situation.

The press briefing was initially planned for 10:00am but was moved to 5:00pm at the last minute.

In the wake of the development, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe invoked the Public Health Act which requires Kenyans to:

  1. Maintain a distance of atleast one metre from persons who are coughing.
  2. Stay at home if coughing and with a fever and difficulty breathing.

He also invoked the law in banning the following:

  1. All public gatherings and events that have large gatherings, including rallies to promote the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)
  2. Inter-school events drama and music festivals and sports meets, but schools will remain open
  3. All prison visits for the next 30 days
  4. Travel to affected countries unless absolutely necessary

The ministry also gave the following instructions:

  1. Public transport operators will regularly clean their vehicles and provide sanitizers for passengers
  2. Members of the public will avoid spreading false information about the virus and the state in Kenya
  3. Churches will continue to operate as usual as long as they provide hand sanitizers for their congregants.

Kenyan Universities also make important changes over Coronavirus scare

  1. Africa Nazarene University has suspended classes Riara.
  2. University has also announced the cancellation of its Graduation ceremony that was slated for Thursday 19th March.

Mombasa county has directed that all night clubs and discos remain closed for 30 days. Bars and Hotels will however remain open till 11pm. They will be required to provide patrons with hand sanitizers.

“All Night clubs and discos to remain closed in Mombasa for the next 30 days to control Coronavirus. Normal bars to operate up to 11PM,” the directive reads.
